Grid modernization is primarily driven by two key initiatives: replacing aging infrastructure and adopting innovative technologies. Electric customers now place greater importance on reliability, resilience, and power quality than ever before.

We Provide Services for Grid Modernization:

  • Enhanced reliability and high power quality

  • Greater resilience to natural hazards

  • Improved system efficiencies

  • Enhanced grid capacity

  • Integration of renewable energy sources

  • Enhanced security against vandalism

  • Increased sustaibability

ADVANCED SYSTEMS
AND TECHNOLOGIES

RELIABILITY AND RESILIENCE

ADVANCED COMMUNICATIONS

Powersect excels in advanced communication in grids and renewables integrating smart technologies to enhance efficiency, reliability and sustainability of energy systems.

  • Smart grids monitor energy flow in real-time

  • IoT and SCADA systems provide detailed data on grid performance

  • Effective communication protocols integrate renewable energy resources

  • Energy usage based on grid condition

  • Cybersecurity for reliable operation of modern grids

Natural hazards are the most common cause of power outages. To keep grids efficient and online, a hardened grid will reduce the likelihood of power outages. The pillars of energy security are reliability, resilience, and efficiency

  • Reliability and resilience of a grid majorily roots back into how the grid was designed and specified

  • Inadequate maintenance of substation equipment results in revenue loss

INTEGRATION OF DERs

Grid modernization grants systems the ability to self-monitor, self-diagnose, and self-heal. Electric grid operators are challenged with rising demand for reliability and resilience in the face of aging infrastructure and shifting customer loads. What makes a grid smart:

  • The adoption of new technologies is key to the journey toward smart grids, which mainly include circuit breakers, power transformers, metering devices and communication systems

  • Two-way power flow of active and reactive power

  • Two-way fast and reliable communications system

  • Control capabilities for real-time analysis of large data

  • Integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)

Our team of engineers provides preliminary research and plans the Distributed Energy Resources Management (DERMS) to upgrade the existing grids to meet sustainability goals or add resilience.

  • Increased energy efficiency

  • Reduced infrastructure costs

  • Lower operational costs

  • Improved grid management

  • Flexibility and scability

Moving Toward SF6-Free HV Circuit Breakers

Fluorinated gas high voltage circuit breakers do not requires significant changes to existing substations. Fluorinated alternative breakers are a direct replacement of an SF6 breaker that means no retro-fitting will be required.

Considerations for Technology Adoption:

  • An alternative to replace leaking breakers or equipment at end of life.

  • Performance of SF6-free breakers is close to SF6 gas circuit breakers.

  • SF6-free breakers are no different than conventional SF6 breakers.

  • Maintenance and operational practices are almost similar to SF6 breakers.

Smart Power Transformers

A smart grid uses technologies, tools and techniques to deliver electricity to customers in a cleaner, more efficient, resilient and responsive way. Smart power transformers are one of the key components of a successful smart grid.

A Smarter Grid Needs Smart Transformers:

  • Using STATCOM, smart transformers provide reactive power compensation and voltage control, supporting stable grid operations for successful Distributed Energy Resources integration.

  • Fiber-optic sensors system to monitor internal temperature of transformer to optimize transformer management.

  • Digital twin technology for predictive maintenance and operational optimization

  • Real-time monitoring, remote control and automation

  • Enhanced grid resilience and reliability

  • Hybrid cooling systems
